TSMC and the Foundry TurnNarrow moat
Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet
Foundries went from 14% to 54% of Lam's equipment revenue in eight years, and Taiwan became its largest region in the June 2026 quarter.
The biggest change in Lam's customer base is the rise of the foundries, companies that make chips designed by others. Foundry was 14% of Lam's system shipments in fiscal 20181 and 54% of equipment and upgrade revenue in fiscal 20262. It passed memory for the first time in fiscal 2025, 45% against 42%3.
TSMC is one of Lam's four most significant customers4. Taiwan, where most of its fabs are, was Lam's second-largest market in fiscal 2026 at $5,222.9 million, up 51.6%56. In the June 2026 quarter Taiwan was the largest region, at 27% of revenue7.
The 10-K explains fiscal 2026's 900 basis point rise in the foundry share as "due to mature node spending as well as investments in leading-edge equipment"8. Foundries serving artificial-intelligence chips are building the most advanced capacity, and management estimated that each $100 billion of data-centre capital spending equates to "roughly $8 billion in WFE"9.
This shift makes Lam less dependent on memory's cycle, but more dependent on one kind of customer. Foundry capacity at the leading edge is built by very few companies.
Taiwan's share has moved fast in both directions. It was 20.0% of revenue in fiscal 2023, 11.2% in fiscal 2024 and 22.5% in fiscal 202610. A foundry customer building leading-edge capacity buys in large, lumpy steps.
Taiwan's growth over twelve years is larger than Korea's. Lam's revenue there was $1,049.2 million in fiscal 201411 and $5,222.9 million in fiscal 202612, about five times as much13.
Taiwan revenue is the figure to follow. It fell from $3,477.9 million to $1,671.8 million between fiscal 2023 and 20241415; a repeat would say the foundry turn is as cyclical as memory ever was.
Taiwan revenue +51.6% in FY2026; 27% of Q4 revenue.
The foundry customers' spending; a repeat of the FY2024 halving would show the foundry turn is as cyclical as memory.
