✦ Dry Resist and the IBM PactThin moat
Lam Research (LRCX) — the future bets
Lam wants to turn photoresist, a liquid chemical step, into a deposition step it can sell tools for, and has IBM as a development partner.
Lam's most unusual bet is a product for a step it did not used to serve. The Aether family is a dry photoresist system for extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) lithography1. The 10-K says Aether forms resist underlayers and films in a vacuum and uses dry development "to improve pattern fidelity at small pitch dimensions"2.
Photoresist is the light-sensitive layer that lithography patterns. Replacing a liquid chemical with a deposited film is a deposition problem, which is why Lam thinks it can win the step.
It has a partner. In April 2026 Lam and IBM entered "a five-year agreement to co-develop advanced semiconductor manufacturing technologies, including High-NA EUV", according to Simply Wall St3. Joint development gives Lam early access to processes that will be qualified later.
The bet is early and the revenue is not disclosed. Lam's research spending, $2,375.9 million in fiscal 20264, carries it.
Lam's research effort behind bets like this is large: research and development expense was $2,375.9 million in fiscal 2026, 10.2% of revenue56. A new product family that replaces a chemical step needs years of joint work with a customer before it is qualified.
The evidence will be qualification. If Aether appears as a qualified production tool at a leading-edge customer within the IBM agreement's five years, the bet has worked; if management stops mentioning it, it has not.
Five-year IBM agreement signed April 2026.
The engineering behind early bets like dry resist; a falling share would mean less capacity for new steps.
