⚠ Single-Source Parts and Rare EarthsLow threat
Lam Research (LRCX) — threat to the moat
Some of Lam's parts come from one supplier and some of its materials from one country, just as orders are rising fastest.
Lam's leadership depends on a supply chain it does not fully control. The 10-K says certain components and sub-assemblies "may only be obtained from a single supplier"1, and that Lam sometimes protects against this by carrying inventory above current need2. Inventory was $4,276.1 million at the end of fiscal 20263.
Materials add a second exposure. China's rare-earth export controls have been "suspended in part until November 2026"4, which leaves a date on which supply could tighten again. Tariffs are already visible: the fiscal 2026 gross margin was "partially offset by aluminum and steel tariff-related spend"5.
Management turned inventory faster in the June 2026 quarter, calling it the "highest inventory turns" level in almost five years6. That is good for cash and leaves less buffer if a single-source part runs short while orders are rising.
Regulation of materials adds a slower risk. The 10-K says rules could require Lam to "transition away from the usage of products containing" a class of chemicals known as PFAS7, which it says could affect its costs and competitive position. Finding and qualifying replacements for materials used inside chambers is itself a qualification exercise.
The test is the next quarter's gross margin. Lam guided 52.0% plus or minus one point for the September 2026 quarter8; a result well below that, with supply or tariffs named as the cause, would say the supply chain is costing the moat money.
