The Installed Base Pays TwiceWide moat
Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet
Each Lam chamber keeps earning through spares, service and upgrades, and that business has grown faster than new-tool sales since fiscal 2019.
Every tool Lam sells keeps earning after it is installed. Customer support-related revenue, which includes "customer service, spares, upgrades, and non-leading-edge equipment" from the Reliant line1, was $8,347.2 million in fiscal 2026, 35.9% of revenue23. The revenue line page, Customer Support, gives its history; this page is about why it exists.
The mechanism is simple. Chambers wear and need parts. Fabs want more output from tools they already own, so they buy upgrades and fleet services. And fabs making older chips buy new or refurbished non-leading-edge tools. All of that goes preferentially to the supplier whose equipment is qualified on the line.
The line has grown faster than new-tool sales over time. From fiscal 2019 to fiscal 2026 customer support revenue rose 2.6 times and systems revenue 2.3 times4. In the June 2026 quarter customer support was up 42.6% from a year earlier5, and management said it has grown the business "faster than the installed base"6.
It also softens the cycle. In fiscal 2024 customer support fell 11.1% against 16.6% for systems7.
Two things limit it. Third-party parts suppliers compete for the most profitable spares8, and much of the line, upgrades and Reliant tools, is still capital spending that customers can defer.
Over the eight fiscal years from 2019 to 2026, customer support brought in about 36% of all of Lam's revenue9. The 10-K says the customer support group exists "to maximize installed equipment performance"10, which is the customer's aim as well as Lam's. That alignment is why the service business is harder to take away than a single tool order.
Customer support revenue has fallen in only one of the last seven fiscal years, fiscal 20241112. Over the same years systems revenue fell twice, in fiscal 2023 and fiscal 202413.
This facet widens the moat because each new chamber enlarges it. The share of revenue from customer support is the check: if it falls well below a third while systems revenue is flat, parts and service are going to others.
Customer support grew 2.6 times FY2019-FY2026; record quarters.
The installed-base business against new tools (2.3 times); slower growth than systems would mean others are taking the service.
