The Revenue LinesWide moat
Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet
Two-thirds of Lam's revenue is new tools and one-third is the fleet already installed, and the second third has grown faster.
Lam reports one business segment1 and splits its revenue two ways that reconcile exactly: by type and by region. By type, fiscal 2026 revenue of $23,232.7 million was $14,885.5 million of systems and $8,347.2 million of customer support-related revenue and other2. Those two lines are the bands of this company's chart, consistently disclosed from fiscal 2019.
Lam also gives a third split, by end market, and it is not the same kind of number. The 10-K presents the percentages of "leading- and non-leading-edge equipment and upgrade revenue" by market: foundry 54%, memory 39% and logic and integrated device manufacturing 7% in fiscal 20263. That base includes Reliant tools and upgrades, which sit in customer support, and excludes spares and service, so the percentages cannot be turned into dollars that add up to either line. They are used on these pages as percentages only.
The two lines behave differently. Systems revenue swings harder: down 16.6% in fiscal 2024, up 29.5% in fiscal 202645. Customer support is steadier and has grown faster over time, 2.6 times since fiscal 2019 against 2.3 times for systems6.
Profit is not disclosed by line; the segment gross margin was 52.2% of revenue in fiscal 20267.
The other split that reconciles, by region, has moved more than the split by type. Taiwan was 11.2% of revenue in fiscal 2024 and 22.5% in fiscal 20268, while China went from 42% to 34%9. Systems and customer support both grew through that shift, so the region split tells where the fabs are being built and the type split tells what Lam is selling to them.
The calls add a third view, the end-market split of systems revenue alone. In the March 2026 quarter foundry was 54% of systems revenue, DRAM 27%, nonvolatile memory 12% and logic and other 7%10; in June memory was 46% and foundry 44%11. Three bases give three sets of percentages; only the dollar lines add up.
The mix tells whether Lam is being paid for its fleet or for new fabs. Systems was 64.1% of revenue in fiscal 202612; a rise toward 70% would make Lam more dependent on new construction just as the cycle is at its strongest.
Systems share rising in the upswing.
Dependence on new construction; a rise toward 70% would make Lam more exposed to the next downturn.
