Lam Research (LRCX) — threat to the moat

Logic and integrated manufacturers fell from 20% to 7% of Lam's equipment revenue in three years, leaving two customer groups carrying the rest.

Lam's end-market mix has a third leg that is getting thinner. Logic and integrated device manufacturers, chipmakers that design and build their own processors, were 20% of Lam's equipment and upgrade revenue in fiscal 2023, 18% in fiscal 2024, 13% in fiscal 2025 and 7% in fiscal 202612.

The third leg is almost gone.

The decline is a customer story more than a technology one. Intel was named among Lam's customers with more than 10% of revenue in fiscal 20183 and is not among the four customers the 10-K calls most significant for fiscal 2024 to 20264. When one large logic manufacturer slows its spending, this slice of Lam's business follows.

The shrinking leg matters because it made Lam less dependent on two customer groups. Foundry at 54% and memory at 39% now make up 93% of the mix56.

The customer list shows the same change. Intel was among Lam's customers above 10% of revenue in fiscal 20187 and among its most significant customers for fiscal 2020 to 20228, and is not named for fiscal 2024 to 20269.

The number that would reverse this concern is the logic share rising again, which would require an integrated manufacturer to restart large fab investments. Another year near 7% would leave Lam's growth resting almost entirely on foundries and memory makers.
