Customers Pay Before DeliveryNarrow moat

Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet

Lam's customers had paid $2.4 billion for tools not yet recognised as revenue, which is the nearest thing to a backlog Lam discloses.

Lam's customers commit money before they receive their tools. Deferred revenue was $2,434.0 million at 28 June 20261, and management said the rise in the June quarter was driven by "customer downpayments"2. Customers who pay in advance are customers who have already chosen.

Deferred revenue ($bn)2.68Jun 20252.77Sep 20252.25Dec 20252.22Mar 20262.43Jun 2026Lam Research Form 10-K FY2026 and FY2026 quarterly releases
Down payments turned up in June.

The schedule shows how quickly the money becomes revenue. Of the $2,434.0 million, $1,798.1 million was expected to be recognised within a year, $460.7 million in one to three years and $175.2 million after three years3. About 74% is due within twelve months4.

The balance moves with the order book. It was $2.68 billion in June 2025 and $2.77 billion in September5, fell to $2.25 billion in December 20256 and $2.22 billion in March 20267, then rose to $2.43 billion in June 20268. The 10-K says the year-on-year decrease was "primarily due a decrease in customer down payments"9.

There is more committed business that the figure does not include. Lam's estimate of future revenue from shipments to customers in Japan, which it does not book as deferred revenue, was approximately $490.2 million at 28 June 202610.

Down payments shrank over the year even as revenue rose. Deferred revenue was $2.68 billion in June 202511 and $2.43 billion in June 202612, about $250 million less13, while fiscal 2026 revenue grew 26.0%14. Customers were paying for more tools with less money up front.

Down payments are the nearest thing Lam discloses to a backlog. Their direction is the signal: another rise in the September 2026 quarter would confirm that customers are paying for the growth management expects in 2027, and a fall would say they are waiting.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady
