Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet
Four unnamed chipmakers took 55% of Lam's revenue in fiscal 2026, and the 10-K names Micron, Samsung, SK hynix and TSMC as its most significant.
Lam sells to a small number of very large chipmakers, and the concentration is high. In fiscal 2026 "four customers accounted for approximately 16 %, 15 %, 12 %, and 12 % of total revenues"1, together 55%2. The 10-K does not say which customer is which, but it names its most significant customers for fiscal 2024 to 2026 as Micron, Samsung, SK hynix and TSMC3.
Revenue concentration and payment concentration tell slightly different stories. At the end of fiscal 2026 five customers accounted for 72% of accounts receivable4, one more than appear in the revenue table5. Lam discloses no backlog or remaining performance obligations; its deferred revenue of $2,434.0 million6 is not broken out by customer, and an additional $490.2 million of expected revenue from shipments to Japan is kept off the balance sheet7.
The concentration moves with the cycle. The customers above 10% took 57% of revenue in fiscal 2019, 38% in fiscal 2023 and just 17% in fiscal 2024, when only one customer crossed the line8. In fiscal 2018 five customers above 10% took 78%910.
The customer base is also changing in kind. Memory makers were 78% of system shipments in fiscal 201811; foundries were 54% of equipment revenue in fiscal 202612. And China, which counts both multinational and domestic Chinese fabs, fell from 42% of revenue in fiscal 2024 to 34%13.
The list of most significant customers has shortened. For fiscal 2020 to 2022 the 10-K named Intel, Kioxia, Micron, Samsung, SK hynix, TSMC and Yangtze Memory Technologies14. For fiscal 2023 to 2025 it named two, Samsung and TSMC15, and for fiscal 2024 to 2026 four16. Intel, Kioxia and Yangtze Memory have dropped off the list.
Revenue concentration and backlog concentration cannot be compared directly, because Lam does not disclose which customers its deferred revenue comes from17. The nearest thing is the Japan figure: approximately $490.2 million of expected revenue from shipments to Japan18, which points to a customer base there that is ordering now for delivery later.
The 10-K's own heading states the risk: "We Have a Limited Number of Key Customers"19. The share of revenue from customers above 10% is the figure to follow; above 60% would leave Lam more dependent on a handful of capital budgets than at any time in the past eight years.
Concentration back to 55% after the FY2024 trough.
Dependence on a few capital budgets; above 60% would be the highest in eight years.
