Customer SupportWide moat
Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet
Customer support earned Lam $8.3 billion in fiscal 2026 and has grown faster than new-tool sales since 2019, falling less in the last downturn.
Customer support is the revenue Lam earns from the fabs it has already equipped. It was $8,347.2 million in fiscal 2026, 35.9% of revenue12, and a record $2,472.4 million in the June 2026 quarter3.
What is inside it is broader than the name. The 10-K says customer support-related revenue includes "customer service, spares, upgrades, and non-leading-edge equipment" from the Reliant product line4. It is run by the Customer Support Business Group, which also sells fleet-level Equipment Intelligence services5. The mechanisms are argued on The Installed Base Pays Twice; this page is the line's record.
How it is paid varies. Spares and service are bought as fabs run; upgrades and Reliant tools are capital purchases, paid for like systems.
The history is steadier than systems but not flat. Customer support was $3,202.5 million in fiscal 2019, $6,732.6 million in fiscal 2023, $5,983.7 million in fiscal 2024 and $8,347.2 million in fiscal 2026678. It rose 2.6 times in seven years, about 14.7% a year9. It rose 14.0% in fiscal 2023 when systems fell, and fell 11.1% in fiscal 2024 against 16.6% for systems10.
Profitability is not disclosed separately; the whole company's segment gross margin was 52.2% in fiscal 202611.
Growth was strong in fiscal 2026: up 20.2%, "mainly due to revenue from spares and non-leading-edge equipment"12, and up 43% in the June quarter13. Management says it has grown the business "faster than the installed base"14.
Lam describes the purpose of the business without embarrassment. Its spares line offers "running cost optimization programs" and focuses on product life extension to help customers increase the return on their capital purchases15. For a toolmaker, selling longer life for old tools might look like selling against itself; in practice each extra year a chamber runs is another year of parts and service on Lam's books.
The outlook depends on the fleet Lam is installing now. The line's share of quarterly revenue, 36.8% in the June 2026 quarter16, is the measure: a fall below 30% in a year when systems revenue is flat would say parts and service from the fleet are going elsewhere.
Three record quarters in a row; +43% y/y in Q4 FY2026.
The installed-base line's weight; below 30% in a flat systems year would mean the fleet's service is going elsewhere.
