⚠ $10 Billion Is a CeilingModerate threat
Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — threat to the moat
The Army's $10 billion agreement is a ceiling, and it is larger than Palantir's entire contracted backlog.
The headline figure on the Army agreement is a limit, not a sale. The Army said the $10 billion "represents the maximum potential value of the contract, not any specific obligations or commitments"1. Palantir will be paid for what the Army orders.
The distinction is visible in Palantir's own figures. Its remaining performance obligations, the contracted revenue it expects to recognise, were $4.9 billion across all customers at 30 June 20262. A $10 billion ceiling on one customer's agreement is larger than all of Palantir's contracted backlog.
Governments also change priorities. The 10-K warns that "there may be a decline in the U.S. and other government budgets"3, and the Army can order less in a lean year without breaching anything.
The arithmetic of the ceiling is modest once it is spread. Over up to ten years4, $10 billion averages at most $1 billion a year5, about 54% of Palantir's 2025 US government revenue6. Even at the cap, the Army agreement is a large customer rather than a transformation.
The right way to read the agreement is by its annual orders. US government revenue was $1.855 billion across all agencies in 20257; if Army orders under the agreement run far below $1 billion a year, the ceiling will never be approached.
