Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — threat to the moat

Palantir's research spending fell from 18% of revenue to 12.5% in two years, which is leverage today and a bet that the product will not age.

Palantir's research spending is shrinking as a share of the business. Research and development was 18.2% of revenue in 2023, 17.7% in 2024 and 12.5% in 20251, because revenue grew from $2,225.0 million to $4,475.4 million while research rose from $404.6 million to $557.7 million23.

Research intensity down a third in two years.

Part of that is healthy. A platform company that reuses one code base across customers should see research fall as a share of revenue, and that is exactly the operating leverage investors are paying for.

Part of it is a risk. AIP is new, the artificial intelligence field moves in months, and a platform company's moat is only as current as its last release. The 10-K lists "platform capabilities and product functionality" first among the factors on which it competes4. A company that wins on functionality cannot let the function age.

The quarterly figures sharpen the point. Research and development expense in the fourth quarter of 2025 was $143.6 million, lower than the $171.5 million of the fourth quarter of 20245, in a quarter in which revenue rose 70% to $1,406.8 million6. Part of the fall is stock pay, which is included in each expense line; the direction is still down.

The test is simple. If research growth stays near a tenth while rivals and customers' own teams ship faster, the evidence will show up in slower US commercial growth first. Watch research spending in 2026: growth below 15% while revenue is guided up 82%7 would widen the gap further.
