Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — threat to the moat
Palantir is valued at about 165 times earnings and 75 times sales, so its owners need years of exceptional growth just to justify today's price.
Palantir's valuation is the largest single risk to its owners. At $192.59 on 24 September 2026 the company was worth $462.81 billion1, 164.71 times trailing earnings per share and 75.18 times trailing sales2. On the company's own 2026 revenue guidance midpoint the market value is about 57 times this year's expected revenue3, and about 100 times the guided adjusted free cash flow4.
A price like that assumes growth continues at an exceptional rate for many years. Revenue grew 93% in the second quarter of 20265; Palantir itself warns that it may not sustain its revenue growth6.
The price has already shown how far it can move. The market value was $44.22 billion at the end of 20207, $13.35 billion at the end of 2022 and $423.66 billion at the end of 20258. In August 2026 CNBC reported that the shares "have lost 29% this year"9; the 52-week range ran from $106.37 to $207.5210. The 10-K warns that the share price "may be volatile and may decline regardless of our operating performance"11.
Earnings quality adds to the risk. The effective tax rate was about 1.4% in 202512, and interest on the cash pile was about 14% of pretax income13; a normal tax charge would cut reported earnings without any change in the business.
Wall Street's own view offers little margin either. The 31 analysts tracked by stockanalysis had an average price target of $195.5714, within about 2% of the share price, and the forward price-to-earnings ratio was 101.5415. Even the optimists expect the multiple to stay extreme for years.
The price is the risk because nothing in the moat justifies it by itself. The number that would show the market is right is revenue growth: above 50% through 2027, it keeps the multiple within reach of the earnings; below 30% at today's price, it does not.
What the market pays for each dollar of revenue; the growth needed to justify it rises with the multiple.
