⚠ Earnings Flattered by a 1.4% Tax RateModerate threat
Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — threat to the moat
Palantir paid tax at about 1.4% in 2025 because of past losses, so its reported earnings will fall behind its operating profit once that ends.
Palantir's reported earnings are higher than they will be once it pays a normal tax rate. Its provision for income taxes was $22.7 million in 2025 on pretax income of $1,657.4 million1, an effective rate of about 1.4%2. The reason is a valuation allowance against deferred tax assets built up in the loss years; the 10-K's rate reconciliation shows the change in that allowance reducing the rate3.
The allowance exists because Palantir lost money for years: $3,220.1 million from 2018 to 20224. Those losses are now sheltering profits.
When the allowance is released, Palantir will record a one-off gain, and afterwards its tax charge will rise toward the statutory level. Net income of $1,625.0 million in 20255 would have been considerably lower at a normal rate.
The size of the effect is in the rate reconciliation. The change in valuation allowances was $467.5 million in 2025, 28.1 percentage points of the tax rate6. Without it, the tax charge would have been several hundred million dollars higher and net income correspondingly lower.
This matters most for the valuation, discussed in the root threats, which is stated on reported earnings. The effective tax rate is the number to watch: once it moves into the high teens or twenties, reported earnings growth will fall behind operating growth for a year or two.
