⚠ Stock Pay Is Rising AgainModerate threat
Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — threat to the moat
Palantir's quarterly stock pay rose 66% in a year, and the payroll tax on it is a cash bill that rises with the share price.
The fall in stock pay as a share of revenue hides a rise in its amount. Stock-based compensation was $265.2 million in the second quarter of 2026, against $160.0 million a year earlier1, an increase of about 66%2. Employer payroll taxes on stock compensation, a cash cost, were $156.1 million in 2025 against $126.0 million in 20243.
Revenue grew faster, 93% in the quarter4, so the ratio still fell. But the rising share price makes every grant more expensive in cash taxes, and a company whose staff are paid in stock that has risen more than thirtyfold since 2022 has to keep granting to retain them.
The dilution continues too. Shares outstanding were 2,391.2 million at the end of 20255 and 2,402.9 million at 30 June 20266.
The quarterly figures swing with grants. Stock-based compensation was $196.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2025, against $281.8 million a year earlier7, and then $265.2 million in the second quarter of 20268. A line that moves by tens of millions from quarter to quarter is a policy choice, not a fixed cost.
The payroll tax line is the one to watch because it is cash. If it grows faster than revenue, stock pay is draining cash as well as diluting owners; if it shrinks as a share of revenue, the cost is under control.
