Adjusted Operating Margin at 62%Narrow moat

Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — moat facet

Palantir's adjusted operating margin went from 28% to 62% in under three years, because revenue doubled while its costs barely moved.

Palantir's operating leverage shows most clearly in the adjusted operating margin, which excludes stock pay and the employer taxes on it. It was 28% in 20231, 39% in 2024 and 50% in 20252, and 62% in the second quarter of 20263. The GAAP operating margin, which includes everything, was 47% in the same quarter4.

More than doubled in under three years.

Palantir combines growth and margin in a single figure it calls the Rule of 40: revenue growth plus adjusted operating margin. It reported a score of 155% in the second quarter of 20265, against 94% a year earlier6.

The margin rose because revenue grew far faster than headcount and research. Revenue grew 56% in 20257 while research rose about 10% and sales costs 19%8.

The guidance says the leverage continues. Palantir expects adjusted income from operations of $4.889 billion to $4.897 billion in 2026 on revenue of $8.150 billion to $8.158 billion9, a margin of about 60%10.

In dollars, adjusted income from operations rose from $632.8 million in 202311 to $2,254.1 million in 202512, about 3.6 times13, on revenue that roughly doubled. That is operating leverage in its plainest form: most of each new dollar of revenue reaches profit.

A slowdown will test it. Holding near 60% while growth slows would prove the margin is structural; a fall toward 50% as growth decelerates would show that part of it was simply revenue running ahead of cost.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Adjusted operating margin 62% in Q2 2026; guided about 60% for 2026.

Profit after all costs except stock pay; a fall toward 50% as growth slows would show the margin was cyclical.
