$4.9 Billion Contracted, $13.1 Billion Hoped ForThin moat
Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — moat facet
Palantir's contracted backlog is $4.9 billion; the $13.1 billion figure assumes every option is exercised and no government cancels.
Palantir publishes two backlog figures, and the difference between them is the most important thing a client analysis can say. Remaining performance obligations, revenue under contract that Palantir expects to recognise, were $4.9 billion at 30 June 20261, up 103% in a year2. Total remaining deal value was $13.1 billion, up 83%3.
The larger figure assumes every contract runs its full course: Palantir's definitions say deal value figures "presume the exercise of all contract options"4 and no termination. Many contracts, especially with governments, can be ended for convenience5. The contracted figure is about 37% of the hoped-for one6.
The near-term part of the contracted backlog is growing. At the end of 2025, 38% of $4.1 billion was expected within twelve months7; at June 2026, about 43% of $4.9 billion8, about $2.1 billion9. Palantir warns that "we may not realize the full deal value of our customer contracts"10.
Backlog concentration is higher than revenue concentration. US commercial is about 48% of deal value11, and the Army's agreement alone has a $10 billion ceiling12.
Contract length is modest. Palantir describes its remaining obligations as extending for an additional four years "on a dollar-weighted average contract duration basis"13. Four years is a long time for a software commitment and a short one for a government relationship that has lasted a decade.
Which way the ratio moves matters most. If remaining performance obligations keep growing faster than deal value, as they did over the past year, customers are committing more firmly; a reversal would mean more of the pipeline is hope.
Contracted backlog grew 103%, faster than deal value's 83%.
Hoped-for revenue including options; growth outrunning contracted obligations would mean the backlog is becoming less certain.
