SoftwareWide moat
Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet
Oracle's software line has earned about $25 billion a year for five years, and its support fees are the most durable revenue the company has.
Software is Oracle's largest line and its oldest. Revenue was $24,541 million in fiscal 2026, about 36% of the total12: $4,737 million of licences and $19,804 million of support3. In the first quarter of fiscal 2027 it was $5,550 million, down 3%4.
What is inside is the database, middleware and applications sold as licences for customers to run on their own computers, plus the support contracts that provide updates and help5. Oracle created this line in its fiscal 2026 report by moving licence support out of the old cloud-and-support category6.
The history is a long plateau. Under the older definitions Oracle reported new software licences of $8,535 million and licence updates and support of $18,847 million in fiscal 20157. On the current basis software revenue was $25,243 million in fiscal 20228 and $24,541 million in fiscal 2026, a small decline over four years in which support rose slightly and licences fell910.
It is paid for in two parts. A licence is paid once, usually at signing. Support is paid every year for as long as the customer uses the software, which for a database can be decades. The licence is the entry fee; support is the annuity.
Profitability is not reported separately. The line sits in the cloud and software segment, which earned about 58.9% in fiscal 202611. Support carries very little incremental cost, which is why the segment margin was about 68% when licences and support dominated it in fiscal 201712.
Growth has stopped and the question is how slowly it shrinks. Licences fell about 8.9% in fiscal 2026 and about 14.5% in the latest quarter13; support fell about 1.2% in the quarter14. Some of the decline is customers moving the same software to Oracle's cloud, which shows up in another line.
The support contract is the part of the line that pays for everything else Oracle does. Support alone, $19,804 million in fiscal 202615, almost matched Oracle's interest expense, research budget and dividend combined: $4,599 million, $10,272 million and $5,787 million, a total of $20,658 million1617. Near enough, the database customers fund the lenders, the engineers and the shareholders' dividend every year.
The line also carries Oracle's pricing power, such as it is. Support fees are negotiated at renewal, and the flat line of the past five years says Oracle has held its price without growing its base. With licences shrinking, support revenue can only grow if prices rise faster than customers leave. Five years at about $19.4 billion to $19.8 billion1819 suggests the two forces are roughly balanced.
This is the line that makes Oracle's moat wide. The verdict would change if support began falling by several percent a year, because that would mean customers are not moving to Oracle's cloud but leaving Oracle altogether.
Down 0.7% in FY2026; down 3% in Q1 FY2027.
The annuity line; declines of several percent a year would mean customers are leaving, not migrating.
