⚠ The Fourth Quarter Carries the YearLow threat

Oracle (ORCL) — threat to the moat

Two-fifths of Oracle's licence sales arrive in one quarter, so a single slow May can turn a slow decline into a fast one.

Licence revenue does not arrive evenly. In fiscal 2026 the four quarters brought $766 million, $939 million, $1,150 million and $1,881 million1; the fourth quarter alone was about 40% of the year2. Oracle states that its total revenues are "typically highest in our fourth fiscal quarter"3.

Licence revenue by quarter, FY2026 ($M)766Q1939Q21,150Q31,881Q4Oracle Q1 FY2027 results release, supplemental tables
The fourth quarter is about 40% of the year.

Concentration in one quarter makes the line fragile. A few large customers delaying a purchase past 31 May can turn a flat year into a falling one. It also makes the first quarter the least informative: the $655 million recorded in the three months to August 20264 says more about timing than about demand.

The deeper risk is that licence purchases are now competing with Oracle's own cloud offerings. A customer that might have bought a licence in the fourth quarter can sign a multi-year cloud contract instead, which enters the remaining performance obligations rather than the licence line.

Oracle explains the pattern itself: its quarterly revenues are affected by seasonal factors, including the structure of its sales force incentive compensation plans5. A company whose sales staff are paid to close by year-end will always see licence sales bunch in May.

The test comes each June. If the fourth-quarter licence figure falls well below the $1,881 million of fiscal 2026, the full-year decline will be larger than last year's 8.9%, and the leak in the support base will be faster.
