⚠ Restructuring Every YearLow threat
Oracle (ORCL) — threat to the moat
Oracle has taken restructuring charges three years running, and the savings are only safe while services and support keep renewing.
Oracle has recorded restructuring and other charges in each of the last three years: $718 million in fiscal 2024, $374 million in fiscal 2025 and $1,838 million in fiscal 20261. The fiscal 2026 plan allows for up to $2.1 billion2, so more may come.
Recurring charges deserve to be treated as costs. Oracle's non-GAAP operating income of $28.9 billion in fiscal 20263 excludes them, along with amortisation and stock compensation; GAAP operating income was $20,606 million4. The gap is about $8.3 billion5.
The risk to the moat is not the charge itself but what the cuts remove. Oracle's services staff, about 34,000 people6, install and run the applications that tie customers in, and its support organisation keeps the $19.8 billion annuity renewing. Cutting either too far saves money this year and costs renewals later.
Stock compensation is another recurring cost the non-GAAP figures leave out. It was $4,811 million in fiscal 2026, against $3,974 million in fiscal 20247. Together with restructuring, that is about $6.6 billion of real costs in one year that the headline adjusted numbers exclude8.
There is no sign of that yet: services revenue rose to $5,743 million in fiscal 20269. The warning would be restructuring charges above $1 billion again in fiscal 2027 alongside falling services and support revenue, which would say the savings are being taken from the customers.
