⚠ Support Slipped in the Latest QuarterModerate threat
Oracle (ORCL) — threat to the moat
Support fell 1.2% in the latest quarter, and Oracle's own cloud strategy is one of the ways customers can stop paying it.
The support line fell in the first quarter of fiscal 2027. It was $4,895 million against $4,955 million a year earlier1, about 1.2% lower2. Total software revenue, licences plus support, fell 3% to $5,550 million3.
A drop of that size proves nothing on its own. But the reasons a support base shrinks are all present. Oracle itself runs its database inside the clouds of Amazon, Microsoft and Google, and its annual report says this multicloud strategy "could lead our customers to migrate away" from Oracle's own cloud to competitors' products4. Customers who move a database to a cloud service stop paying support on the old licence, even when they stay with Oracle.
The other reason is the one on the next page: new licences, which later turn into support contracts, are shrinking.
The mix already shows the direction. Software was 38% of revenue in the first quarter of fiscal 2026 and 29% a year later5. That is mostly because cloud grew, but it means the annuity no longer carries the company the way it did.
This threat is real only if the slippage continues. Four consecutive quarters of support below the prior year would say the base has started to erode.
