✦ The AI Database: $2.4 Billion to $20 BillionNarrow moat

Oracle (ORCL) — the future bets

Oracle's AI database target is the one bet that deepens the old moat, by making the data customers cannot move useful to AI as well.

Of all Oracle's bets, this is the one that extends the database moat rather than betting beside it. In October 2025 Oracle said it expected AI-powered database and AI data platform revenue of $20 billion in fiscal 2030, up from $2.4 billion in fiscal 2025 and $3 billion in fiscal 20261. That would be more than eight times fiscal 20252.

AI database and data platform revenue ($bn)2.4FY20253.0FY2026 expected20FY2030 targetCNBC, 16 October 2025, Oracle analyst meeting
An eightfold target on the old franchise.

The idea is that companies will want to use AI models on their own private data, and much of that data already sits in Oracle databases. If the database can run the AI work next to the data, the customer has another reason not to move it.

Part of the strategy is to be everywhere. Oracle's multicloud AI database grew 404% in the fourth quarter of fiscal 20263, and Oracle is building multicloud datacenters inside the clouds of Amazon, Google and Microsoft4. That puts the AI database wherever the customer's other computing runs.

Oracle does not report AI database revenue separately in its filings, so the $2.4 billion and $3 billion figures come from its analyst meeting rather than its accounts. The closest reported measure is the cloud and software segment, which had revenue of $17,157 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up about 33%56.

The fiscal 2026 figure of about $3 billion7 was a forecast when Oracle gave it, and Oracle's annual report does not break AI database revenue out. Investors will have to take the next update from Oracle's own presentations, which makes the target harder to track than the cloud infrastructure plan, whose revenue appears in every quarterly release.

This bet would widen the moat if it works, because it makes the database more valuable to the customers who cannot leave it. The falsifier is the software line: if licences and support keep falling while the AI database is supposed to be growing eightfold, customers are adopting AI somewhere else.

Moat trajectory: Widening
