Engineered Hardware Earns 65 Cents on the DollarNarrow moat

Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet

Oracle's shrinking hardware line earns a higher segment margin than its cloud, because what is left is the part customers cannot swap.

Oracle still sells machines, and they earn more than most people expect. The hardware segment had revenue of $3,084 million in fiscal 2026 and a segment margin of $2,017 million1, about 65.4%2. The cloud and software segment earned about 58.9%3.

A shrinking business with a rising margin.

The hardware is mostly engineered systems: servers and storage built to run Oracle's own database faster than general-purpose machines, plus operating systems and hardware support4. A bank that runs its core ledger on an Exadata machine has bought the database, the hardware and the support together. Each makes the other harder to replace.

The margin has improved as the business shrank. In fiscal 2017 hardware revenue was $4,152 million and the segment margin $1,709 million5, about 41.2%6. Revenue has fallen by about a quarter since7, and what remains includes support on installed machines and systems built around the database.

It is a small business and Oracle runs it with few people: about 2,000 of its 141,000 employees work in hardware8.

The latest quarter was the hardware line's best start to a year in some time. Hardware revenue was $774 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up 15%9, while the segment margin was $452 million against $447 million a year earlier10. Higher revenue at a slightly lower margin suggests Oracle is shipping more systems, perhaps to the multicloud datacenters it is building inside other clouds.

This facet adds to the switching costs rather than standing alone. The number to watch is the hardware segment margin; it was 58.4% in the first quarter of fiscal 202711, and a fall below 50% for a full year would say customers are buying fewer of the integrated systems that tie them to the database.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Revenue flat at about $3bn; margin 65% in FY2026.
