Twenty-One Thousand Fewer EmployeesNarrow moat

Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet

Oracle cut about 21,000 jobs in a year of 17% revenue growth, and says AI lets it write more software with fewer people.

Oracle ended fiscal 2026 with about 141,000 full-time employees, against about 162,000 a year earlier12. That is about 21,000 fewer people, roughly 13%3, in a year revenue grew about 17.3%4.

About 23,000 below the fiscal 2023 peak.

The cuts cost money up front. Oracle recorded $1.8 billion of restructuring charges in fiscal 2026 under a plan of up to $2.1 billion5; restructuring and other charges were $374 million a year earlier6.

Management says technology made the cuts possible. In March 2026 its co-chief executive said AI code generation was enabling Oracle to "build more software in less time with fewer people"7. If that is right, the cost of maintaining the software moat is falling, which widens it.

The workforce now looks like this: about 43,000 in research, 34,000 in services, 26,000 in cloud and software operations, 25,000 in sales and marketing, 11,000 in general and administrative work and 2,000 in hardware8. About 49,000 of the total are in the United States9.

The history shows how unusual this is. Headcount was about 136,000 in fiscal 2016, 164,000 after Cerner in fiscal 2023 and 159,000 in fiscal 2024101112. The fiscal 2026 cut took headcount about 23,000 below its fiscal 2023 peak13.

Most of Oracle's people now work outside the United States. About 49,000 were American and about 92,000 international at the end of fiscal 202614. The cuts leave Oracle about 23,000 people smaller than at the end of fiscal 2023, the first year after Cerner, when it employed about 164,0001516, while revenue is about a third higher than that year17.

Fewer people serving the same customers is good for margins and neutral for the moat, provided the service does not suffer. The figure that would show it suffering is support revenue: if it falls by more than a few percent a year after the cuts, customers are noticing.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Headcount 141,000 in May 2026, from 162,000; restructuring $1.8bn.
