HardwareNarrow moat

Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet

Oracle's shrinking hardware line earns about 65 cents of segment margin on every dollar, because what remains is the equipment built around its database.

Hardware is Oracle's smallest product line and its most profitable per dollar. Revenue was $3,084 million in fiscal 2026, about 4.6% of the total12, and $774 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up 15%3.

Hardware revenue ($M)5,205FY20154,152FY20173,704FY20193,359FY20213,274FY20232,936FY20253,084FY2026Oracle Forms 10-K FY2017 (older basis), FY2019, FY2022, FY2025, FY2026
Down by two-fifths since fiscal 2015.

What is inside is Oracle Engineered Systems, servers, storage, industry-specific hardware, operating systems and virtualization software, plus hardware support4. The engineered systems are machines designed to run Oracle's database faster; the support contracts keep them running.

The history is one of decline. The line was $5,205 million in fiscal 2015 under older reporting5, $4,152 million in fiscal 20176, $3,183 million in fiscal 20227 and $2,936 million in fiscal 20258. Fiscal 2026 was only the second yearly rise since fiscal 2017, after fiscal 20239.

It is paid for as equipment sales, recognised when delivered, and as support contracts recognised over time. About 2,000 of Oracle's 141,000 employees work in the hardware business10.

Profitability is reported, because hardware is a separate segment. The segment margin was $2,017 million in fiscal 2026, about 65.4% of revenue1112, against about 41.2% in fiscal 201713. Oracle notes that segment margins reflect only direct controllable costs14, so the full profit is lower. In the latest quarter the margin was $452 million on $774 million15.

The outlook depends on whether Oracle's multicloud strategy creates new demand. Oracle's systems now run inside the datacenters of Amazon, Microsoft and Google16, and the first quarter's 15% growth may be the start of that. It may also be one good quarter in a declining business.

The quarterly figures show the line is lumpy. Hardware revenue was $670 million, $776 million, $714 million and $924 million through fiscal 202617, with the fourth quarter the strongest, as it is for the company as a whole. Oracle notes that its revenues and operating margins are typically highest in its fourth fiscal quarter18, and hardware, sold in large orders, shows that pattern more sharply than the subscription lines.

Hardware matters more to the moat than to the income statement, because each engineered system in a customer's datacenter is one more thing tying the database to Oracle. The verdict would change if revenue fell back below $2.9 billion a year, which would say customers are retiring the machines rather than replacing them.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Revenue $3.1bn; up 15% in Q1 FY2027.
