Debt: $87 Billion to $130 BillionThin moat

Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet

Oracle's debt rose by about half in two years and it is now one of the biggest bond issuers outside the banks.

Oracle has financed its build mainly with bonds. Senior notes and other borrowings were $87,202 million in May 2024, $92,917 million in May 2025 and $130,105 million in May 202612, a rise of about 49% in two years3. In fiscal 2026 it issued $46,093 million of notes and loans and repaid $6,942 million4.

Up about half in two years.

The borrowing came in large pieces. In September 2025 Oracle sold $18 billion of notes, the longest maturing in 2065 at 6.100%5. The company said it raised $43 billion of debt financing in fiscal 20266.

Oracle is now one of the largest borrowers in the investment-grade market. TipRanks reported that around $120 billion of its bonds are in the Bloomberg high-grade corporate index, "making it the biggest issuer in that group outside of banks"7.

Net debt, borrowings less cash and marketable securities, was about $97.6 billion in May 2026 and about $88.3 billion in August after the share sale8. Interest expense was $4,599 million in fiscal 20269.

The rating agencies count more than the bonds. Stockanalysis, on S&P data, shows Oracle's debt including leases at $169.14 billion against cash of $37.08 billion10, and an enterprise value of $554.00 billion11. Investing.com's report of the S&P downgrade described a debt load of about $160 billion12. On any of these measures the debt is far larger than the $87,202 million of borrowings Oracle carried in May 202413.

Oracle's own risk factors state the obvious: its ability to pay interest and repay principal depends on its ability to generate sufficient cash flows to service the debt14. With free cash flow negative, the debt is being serviced from new money. The figure to follow is interest expense against operating income; it was about 21% in the first quarter of fiscal 202715, and a rise above a third would mean the lenders are taking a large share of what the business earns.
