Cloud ApplicationsNarrow moat
Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet
Oracle's application subscriptions grow about ten percent a year without a single down quarter, the steady half of its cloud.
Cloud applications are Oracle's software sold as subscriptions. Revenue was $15,888 million in fiscal 2026, about 24% of the total12, and $4,219 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up 10%3.
What is inside is Oracle's application suites delivered through the cloud: Fusion for finance, human resources and supply chains, NetSuite for smaller companies, Oracle Health from the Cerner acquisition, and industry applications for sectors such as banking and utilities4.
The line is older than the infrastructure business. Under Oracle's earlier reporting, cloud software-as-a-service revenue was $1,476 million in fiscal 2015 and $3,211 million in fiscal 20175. The current line was $12,934 million in fiscal 2024, $14,272 million in fiscal 2025 and $15,888 million in fiscal 20266, growth of about 10.3% and 11.3%7. The Cerner purchase in June 2022, for $28.2 billion8, added a large block of health records revenue.
It is paid for by subscription: customers pay per user or per module, usually for several years, and renew. That makes it steady. The quarters through fiscal 2026 were $3,839 million, $3,898 million, $4,026 million and $4,126 million9, with no quarter below the one before.
Profitability is not disclosed for this line alone; it is part of the cloud and software segment10. Management says AI code generation is making the suites more profitable to build11, and the company cut its workforce by about 21,000 in fiscal 20261213, but no margin for applications is reported.
Growth is steady rather than fast. Cloud applications contributed 16% of the growth in cloud revenue in fiscal 202614. The outlook rests on Oracle Health, which management expects to reach double-digit growth in fiscal 202715, and on AI features in the suites.
Oracle Health is the part of the line with the most to prove. The Cerner purchase brought $5.9 billion of revenue in fiscal 202316, and management now expects its new AI patient care management system to push Oracle Health's growth to double digits in fiscal 202717. If it does, the whole line should accelerate beyond its steady ten percent; if it does not, the line will keep growing at the pace of the Fusion and NetSuite suites alone.
The line's share of Oracle is falling even as it grows. Cloud applications were about 25.7% of revenue in the first quarter of fiscal 2026 and about 21.8% a year later1819, because cloud infrastructure grew so much faster. The applications business is becoming a smaller part of a company whose valuation depends increasingly on the infrastructure bet.
The line is the second layer of the database moat, and its growth rate is the number that decides the verdict. Ten percent a year says the suites keep their customers and win a few more; a fall below 8% for a full year would say SAP, Salesforce and Workday are taking the new business.
About 10-11% growth for three years.
The steady cloud line; a fall below 8% would mean the suites are losing new customers to rivals.
