Software Support: $19.8 Billion, Five Years FlatWide moat

Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet

Oracle's support fees have barely changed in five years, which is exactly what a customer base that cannot leave looks like.

Oracle's most valuable business is the one that barely moves. Software support, the annual fee customers pay for updates and help on the database, middleware and applications they already own, was $19,804 million in fiscal 20261. It was $19,365 million in fiscal 20222, so four years added about 2.3% in total3.

Four years, about 2% of growth in total.

The reason customers keep paying is easy to state. An Oracle database holds the accounts of a bank, the subscribers of a telephone company, the payroll of a ministry. Moving it means rewriting the programs that read it, testing them again and accepting risk for very little gain. Support revenue is the direct measure of that reluctance: a customer who stops paying is a customer who has moved.

The quarterly figures show how steady it is. Support was $4,955 million, $4,938 million, $4,969 million and $4,943 million in the four quarters of fiscal 20264. That is about as steady as revenue gets.

It is also large next to everything outside the cloud. Support alone was about 29% of fiscal 2026 revenue5. It sits inside the cloud and software segment, which earned a margin of $34,468 million on $58,530 million of revenue6. Oracle says those segment margins reflect only "the direct controllable costs of each line of business"7, so the true profit is lower, but the shape is clear: this is the part of Oracle that funds the rest.

Under Oracle's older reporting the same pattern goes back further. Licence updates and product support was $18,847 million in fiscal 20158, so the fee customers pay to keep their Oracle software has risen by only about $1 billion in eleven years9. A decade of inflation and product changes has barely moved it.

The figure to follow is support revenue each quarter. A flat line says the customers stay. A fall of several percent a year for two years running would say the database customers are finally leaving, and the most profitable part of Oracle would be shrinking in the very years the company is borrowing to build the new one.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

About $4.9-5.0bn every quarter; down 1.2% in Q1 FY2027.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Software support revenue, latest quarter
$4,895M, -1.2% (Q1 FY2027)

The annuity at the centre of the moat; a steady decline of several percent a year would mean customers are moving their databases.
