Free Cash Flow: Minus $23.7 BillionThin moat
Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet
Oracle burned $23.7 billion of free cash in fiscal 2026 and plans to raise another $40 billion this year, while still paying a dividend.
Oracle has turned from one of the great cash generators in software into a company that consumes cash. Free cash flow was $11,807 million in fiscal 2024, about minus $394 million in fiscal 2025 and minus $23,686 million in fiscal 202612. Operating cash flow grew to $31,977 million last year3; capital expenditures grew to $55,663 million4.
The quarters show the swing. Free cash flow was minus $362 million, minus $9,967 million, minus $11,484 million and minus $1,873 million through fiscal 20265, and minus $5,396 million in the first quarter of fiscal 20276. Capex was about 83% of revenue last year7.
The dividend continues regardless. Oracle paid $5,787 million of dividends in fiscal 20268, all of it effectively borrowed in a year of negative free cash flow.
This matters to the moat in a specific way. The database annuity was worth most when its cash could be returned or reinvested at high returns. Oracle is now reinvesting all of it, plus borrowed money, in a business whose returns are not yet known.
On a trailing basis the gap has widened further. Stockanalysis puts Oracle's free cash flow for the twelve months to August 2026 at minus $28.72 billion, on operating cash flow of $46.94 billion and capital expenditure of $75.66 billion9. The trailing operating cash flow includes the large customer prepayments of the latest quarter10, so without them the gap would be larger still.
Oracle's own plan says the deficit continues: it expects to raise about $40 billion of debt and equity in fiscal 202711, and consensus has free cash flow at about minus $37.6 billion12. The turning point to look for is a quarter of positive free cash flow without large customer prepayments; until it comes, the old business is financing the new one on credit.
FCF minus $23.7bn in FY2026 and minus $5.4bn in Q1 FY2027.
The gap between building and earning; a positive quarter without prepayments would mark the turn.
