ServicesThin moat
Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet
Oracle's consulting arm earns its best margin in a decade, and its real value is getting customers installed on software they will not later leave.
Services is the people business inside Oracle. Revenue was $5,743 million in fiscal 2026, about 8.5% of the total12, and $1,414 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up 5%3.
What is inside is consulting services and customer success services4: the work of installing, configuring and upgrading Oracle's software for customers, and helping them use it. About 34,000 of Oracle's employees work in services5.
The history has one jump. Services revenue was $3,546 million in fiscal 2015 under older reporting6, $3,359 million in fiscal 20177 and $3,205 million in fiscal 20228. It rose to $5,594 million in fiscal 20239, the year Oracle bought Cerner, whose hospital customers need large implementation projects. It was $5,431 million in fiscal 2024 and $5,233 million in fiscal 202510.
It is paid for mostly as work is done, by the hour or by the project. That makes it cyclical: customers cut consulting first when budgets tighten.
Profitability is reported because services is a segment. The margin was $1,533 million in fiscal 2026, about 26.7%1112, against $993 million and about 19.0% in fiscal 202513 and $698 million, about 20.8%, in fiscal 20171415. In the latest quarter it reached $445 million on $1,414 million, about 31.5%1617. Revenue per services employee was about $169,000 in fiscal 202618.
Growth is modest. Revenue rose about 9.7% in fiscal 202619 and 5% in the latest quarter. Management expects Oracle Health growth to reach double digits in fiscal 202720, which would bring more implementation work.
Services is also where the Cerner acquisition is most visible. Services revenue rose from $3,205 million in fiscal 2022 to $5,594 million in fiscal 202321 because hospital record systems need long, expensive installations. The quarters of fiscal 2026 ran $1,349 million, $1,428 million, $1,443 million and $1,523 million22, rising each quarter, which suggests the hospital projects are still coming.
Services is not a moat in itself; consultants can be hired from any firm. It feeds the moat by getting customers installed on Oracle's applications. Services would stop helping the moat if revenue fell for two years while cloud applications kept growing, because that would mean other firms are doing the installation work and holding the customer relationship.
Revenue +9.7% in FY2026; margin 26.7%.
Profit on installation work; a fall back below 20% would mean price competition from outside consultants.
