Oracle (ORCL) — threat to the moat

Only about 13% of Oracle's $664 billion backlog is due in the next year, and half of it lies more than three years out.

The backlog is enormous and slow. Oracle expected to recognise about 12% of its $638 billion of remaining performance obligations over the twelve months after May 2026, 34% in months 13 to 36, 34% in months 37 to 60 and the remainder after that1. At the end of August 2026 the proportions were 13%, 37% and 34% on $664 billion2.

Half of it is three years or more away.

In dollars, that is roughly $77 billion expected in the year after May 2026 and roughly $86 billion in the year after August3. About half of the total lies more than three years away4.

A promise five years out is worth less than one due next year, for two reasons. The customer has to exist and be able to pay in 2030. And the capacity has to be built on time, with power that is not yet connected, which the root threat on Project Jupiter examines.

The backlog grew from $138 billion in May 20255 to $664 billion in August 20266, nearly five times7. Most of that growth is in the later years.

What the market should watch is not the total but the next twelve months. If the near-term share stays near 13% while the total keeps climbing, the backlog is growing faster than Oracle can turn it into revenue.
