Applied Global ServicesWide moat

Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet

Applied's services business has grown every year for five years and now holds a larger backlog than the machines.

Applied Global Services is the company's annuity. It had revenue of $6,385 million in fiscal 2025, 22.5% of the total12, and operating income of $1,792 million3. In the quarter to July 2026, on the new basis, it sold $1,781 million, up 21.7%, and earned $536 million45.

A third of revenue kept as gross profit.

The segment "provides integrated solutions" including "spares, upgrades, services, 200 millimeter and other equipment and factory automation software"6. In practice that means keeping customers' Applied tools running, improving their output with upgrade kits, and selling software that runs a factory's flow of wafers.

It has a long and steady history. Revenue was $4,155 million in fiscal 2020, $5,013 million in 2021, $5,543 million in 2022, $5,732 million in 2023 and $6,225 million in 202478, growing about 9% a year to 20259 and rising in every year, including those in which machine sales stalled.

How it is paid is changing. Service agreements are recognised over time10, and Applied's strategy is "to continue to shift the AGS’ service and spares business to a subscription agreement model"11. The services backlog, $7,141 million at October 2025 against $5,643 million three years earlier1213, is where those contracts show.

It is profitable but less so than the machines. The segment's gross margin was 31.8% in fiscal 2023, 34.3% in 2024 and 33.4% in 202514, and its operating margin 26.7%, 29.1% and 28.1%15. Service takes engineers and inventory; a tool design, once paid for, does not.

The boundaries moved at the start of fiscal 2026. The 200mm equipment business, which used to sit here, moved to Semiconductor Systems16. On the new basis the segment's revenue for the first nine months was $5,005 million against a recast $4,236 million a year earlier17, up 18.2%18, faster than the machines. The operating margin for those nine months was 29.2%19.

The outlook rests on the fleet. Every machine sold in the fiscal 2026 boom will need service for years, and the subscription model makes more of that revenue contractual.

The quarterly recasts show the services margin rising steadily. On the fiscal 2026 basis the segment earned $438 million on $1,559 million in the first quarter, against $336 million on $1,353 million a year earlier, and $487 million on $1,665 million in the second, against $378 million on $1,420 million20. Every quarter of fiscal 2026 has had higher services profit than the same quarter of 2025.

The segment also carries some of the company's goodwill: $1,032 million at the end of fiscal 202521, from past purchases of service and software businesses. Its capital needs are small, $57 million of capital spending in fiscal 202522, so almost all of its operating income is available for the rest of the company.

This is the steadiest line and the one that would soften the next downturn. Its growth rate in a year of falling machine sales is the proof to look for; a decline in services revenue in any year would mean the annuity is weaker than its record suggests.
