The Service Backlog Overtook the MachinesWide moat
Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet
Applied's unfilled service contracts now exceed its unfilled machine orders, which makes the order book steadier than it has ever looked.
The shape of Applied's order book has changed. At the end of fiscal 2025 the services backlog was $7,141 million and the systems backlog $7,105 million1, the first time on the figures here that services were the larger. Three years earlier systems made up $12,691 million of a $19,011 million total and services $5,643 million2.
Two things happened at once. The systems backlog fell by 44% as customers took delivery of machines ordered in the 2022 boom3. And the services backlog grew by 27%4, as more of the service business moved to long contracts.
The total backlog was $15,002 million at October 2025, down 21% from October 20225, and about 31% of it is not expected to be filled within twelve months6. Applied does not report backlog in its quarterly filings; contract liabilities, the money customers have paid in advance, rose to $3,271 million at 26 July 2026 from $2,566 million at the start of the fiscal year7.
The order book beyond twelve months has barely moved in four years. About 32% of the backlog was not expected within a year at October 20228, and about 31% at October 20259. The mix inside it has changed; the time horizon has not.
The backlog also changed shape at the bottom of the cycle. At October 2021 services were $4,335 million of an $11,758 million backlog10; at October 2025 they were $7,141 million of $15,002 million11. The share rose from about 37% to 48%12.
A backlog led by services is steadier than one led by machines. The change to watch is the services share of backlog, 48% at October 202513; if it keeps rising while the systems backlog rebuilds, the subscription model is taking hold.
Services backlog $5.6bn (Oct 2022) to $7.1bn (Oct 2025).
Customer prepayments; a fall while revenue grows would mean customers are paying later and committing less.
