Research at ScaleWide moat

Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet

Applied spends $3.6 billion a year on research across seven kinds of process step, a budget that has grown two and a half times in ten years.

Applied's research spending is the engine that keeps its breadth current. It spent $3,570 million on research, development and engineering in fiscal 20251, about 12.6% of revenue2, and is building a research centre in Silicon Valley that took most of its $2,260 million of capital spending34.

Gross profit grew by more dollars than research did.

Research serves two purposes. It creates the new steps each chip generation needs, and it creates switching costs early, because a customer that develops a process on Applied's tools tends to buy them for production.

The industry around it is concentrated. TechInsights ranks Applied among the top five equipment suppliers with ASML, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron and KLA, unchanged from 2024 to 20255. A rival must spend at a similar scale to keep up across as many steps.

Applied has also bought steps, most importantly ion implantation with Varian in 20116.

Research is also where most of Applied's people work. The company had about 36,500 regular full-time employees at the end of fiscal 2025, spanning 25 countries7, and revenue per employee of about $845 thousand8. The research budget is spread across that workforce rather than concentrated in one laboratory.

The research budget is also defended by the returns it has produced. Operating income grew from $1,693 million in fiscal 2015 to $8,289 million in 2025910, about five times11, while research grew two and a half times12. Each dollar of research has been matched by a growing amount of profit, which is the only real justification for spending it.

The research spending also buys a steady stream of product launches. The third-quarter release of fiscal 2026 introduced packaging tools for stacked memory and chiplets and a new electron-beam inspection system13. A company launching several significant tools a quarter is keeping its breadth current; a slowdown in launches would be the earliest sign that the budget is being stretched.

The moat here is wide, but it costs more each year. The measure that decides whether it still pays is the return on that spending: gross profit grew from $12,384 million in fiscal 2023 to $13,808 million in 20251415, faster than research rose from $3,102 million to $3,570 million1617. If research begins to grow faster than gross profit for several years, the scale is buying less than it used to.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Research rising; new centre adding capital cost.
