Thirteen Quarters of Wider Gross MarginsNarrow moat

Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet

Applied has widened its gross margin for thirteen quarters in a row, from 46.7% to 50.3%.

Applied has been charging more for what it makes, quarter after quarter. Its gross margin was 46.7% in fiscal 2023, 47.5% in 2024 and 48.7% in 20251, and 50.3% in the quarter to July 20262. The chief financial officer called it the company's "13th consecutive quarter of year-over-year gross margin expansion"3.

Three things lie behind it. The systems business has moved toward new steps, which carry higher margins than mature ones; the segment gross margin was 54.2% in fiscal 20254. The service business has raised its own margin, and the Display business, folded into Corporate and Other, earned 22% on revenue in fiscal 2025 against 6% the year before5.

Thirteen quarters is long enough to rule out luck, but not long enough to prove the pattern will survive a downturn. Operating income in fiscal 2025 was 29.2% of revenue6, not far above the 28.9% of the two years before7, because research spending rose almost as fast as gross profit.

Non-GAAP earnings tell the same story as the gross margin. Adjusted diluted earnings per share were $8.65 in fiscal 2024 and $9.42 in 20258, and $3.50 in the quarter to July 2026, up 41%9. The company is turning each dollar of higher margin into earnings rather than spending all of it on research.

The margin has also been rising while revenue was flat, which is the stronger evidence. Revenue grew only 2.5% in fiscal 2024 and 4.4% in 202510, yet the gross margin rose a point in each year11. A margin that rises without volume is a margin earned by price and mix.

The pattern is the company's claim to pricing power made visible. The gross margin is the figure to track: holding near 50% in the next quarter of falling revenue would prove it, and a drop back below 47% would mean the gains came from a strong market rather than from better products.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Gross margin 46.7% (FY2023) to 50.3% (Q3 FY2026).

Pricing across the business; a fall below 47% in a softer market would mean the gains were cyclical.
