⚠ Buying Back Near the TopModerate threat
Applied Materials (AMAT) — threat to the moat
Applied spent over $6 billion on buybacks in 2022, the year its market value fell by two-fifths, and now trades at 40 times earnings.
Buybacks help owners only if the price is sensible, and Applied's timing has been mixed. It paid an average of $190.27 a share in fiscal 2024 and $162.85 in 20251; the shares closed at $474.25 on 24 September 20262, so those purchases look cheap today.
But the company has also bought heavily near cyclical peaks. It spent $5,283 million in fiscal 2018, the year before revenue fell 12.6%3, and $6,103 million in fiscal 20224, a year in which its market value fell from $139.82 billion to $82.20 billion5.
The shares now trade at about 40.6 times trailing earnings6, well above the 29.1 times at the end of calendar 20257. Buying at that multiple returns less to remaining owners.
The current authorisation is large enough to repeat the pattern. About $14.0 billion remained under buyback programmes at October 20258, and Applied spent $440 million in the quarter to July 20269, when the shares traded far above the prices of 2024 and 2025. The pace has slowed as the price has risen.
The measure is the average price paid in the next 10-K. Heavy buying at more than 35 times earnings would be the company spending its cycle-top cash at a cycle-top price.
