200mm: The Old Tools Moved BackNarrow moat

Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet

Applied moved its 200mm tools from services to systems in 2026, and services still grew faster than machines on the new basis.

Applied rearranged its books at the start of fiscal 2026, and the change says something about its older products. The 10-Q explains: "we have moved our 200 millimeter (200mm) equipment business from our AGS segment to our Semiconductor Systems segment"1. It also began allocating all corporate support costs to the segments and renamed Corporate and Other as Other2.

Services grew almost twice as fast as systems.

The 200mm business sells machines for the smaller wafers used for power chips, sensors and other mature products. Under the old reporting it sat in services, because the tools were often refurbished or rebuilt. Moving it to systems puts new and older machines in one place.

The effect on the numbers is modest but real. On the new basis, services revenue for the first nine months of fiscal 2026 was $5,005 million against a recast $4,236 million a year earlier3, and systems revenue $18,146 million against $16,562 million4. Applied did not publish a recast full fiscal 2025, so the annual series in this app stops at the old basis.

For the moat, the change is housekeeping, not strategy. But it makes the service annuity look smaller and the machine business larger than before.

The recast figures also show services growing faster than systems in each quarter of fiscal 2026. In the quarter to July services revenue was $1,781 million against a recast $1,463 million a year earlier, and systems $7,040 million against $5,564 million5. On the new basis both grew; services grew more steadily through the first half, when systems fell in the first quarter6.

The change also makes Applied's two main segments easier to compare with rivals'. All equipment, old and new, now sits in one segment, and services in another. The old boundary put some machine sales in services, which flattered the service line's size; the new one shows the annuity as it is.

The figure to follow is services growth on the new basis: 18.2% for the nine months7. If that holds above the systems rate of 9.6%8 through fiscal 2027, the annuity is growing faster than the machines, with or without 200mm.

The annuity measured without 200mm; growth below the systems rate would mean the fleet is not yet paying more.
