A Third of the Shares RetiredNarrow moat

Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet

Applied has retired a third of its shares in ten years, so earnings per share grew almost eight times while profit grew five.

Applied has used its cash to shrink itself, and the effect on each share has been large. Diluted shares were 1,226 million in fiscal 2015 and 808 million in 20251, a fall of 34%2, and 800 million in the quarter to July 20263.

A third fewer shares in ten years.

The buybacks were steady and large. Applied repurchased $4,893 million of stock in fiscal 2025, 30 million shares at an average price of $162.854, and $3,851 million in 2024 at an average of $190.275. In March 2025 the board authorised a further $10.0 billion, leaving about $14.0 billion available at October 20256.

The result shows in earnings per share. Net income grew from $1,377 million in fiscal 2015 to $6,998 million in 20257, about five times; diluted earnings per share grew from $1.12 to $8.6689, almost eight times.

Buybacks do not widen a moat, but they return the moat's profits to owners without the company having to find acquisitions for them.

Owners have not been diluted by the stock the company pays its staff. Shares outstanding were 792,705,219 at the end of 202510 and 793.60 million in September 202611, while the diluted count kept falling. Institutions held 85.45% and insiders 0.26%12.

The buybacks have also outrun the stock issued to employees. The chief executive alone received long-term awards of $26,944,995 in fiscal 202513, and the company's pay ratio was about 330 to 114. Stock pay is real, but the falling share count shows the buyback has more than offset it.

Applied has been a disciplined shrinker. The figure to watch is the diluted share count: if it stops falling while the company keeps buying, stock pay is eating the buyback.

Cash returned by buyback; a quarter with none while cash builds would signal caution on the cycle.
