$3.6 Billion a Year on ResearchWide moat

Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet

Applied spends $3.6 billion a year on research and did not cut it even when revenue fell in 2019.

Applied's research budget is large and still rising. Research, development and engineering cost $3,570 million in fiscal 2025, up from $3,233 million in 20241, about 12.6% of revenue2. Ten years earlier the figure was $1,451 million3; it has grown about two and a half times4.

The money goes mostly to the machines. Semiconductor Systems accounted for $3,042 million of the fiscal 2025 total5. It pays for the new deposition, etch and inspection steps that each chip generation needs, years before a customer places an order.

This is the part of the moat a newcomer finds hardest to copy. A rival can match one tool; matching a research budget of this size across seven kinds of process step takes a company of Applied's revenue. TechInsights' top five was unchanged between 2024 and 20256.

The spending has also held through bad years. In fiscal 2019, when revenue fell 12.6%7, research rose from $2,022 million to $2,054 million8.

Research grew in every year of the last decade. It was $2,234 million in fiscal 2020, $2,485 million in 2021, $2,771 million in 2022, $3,102 million in 2023 and $3,233 million in 20249. Even when revenue rose only 2.5% in fiscal 202410, research rose.

Research spending also rose faster than the share count fell. Research per diluted share went from about $1.18 in fiscal 2015 to about $4.42 in 202511, so each owner's share of the research budget grew almost fourfold. Buybacks have not come at the expense of the laboratory.

Research is what keeps Applied at the new steps. The ratio of research to revenue is the figure to watch: a fall below 10% in a boom would mean the company is harvesting rather than building, and a rival spending more would eventually show it.
