The Installed Base Pays RentWide moat
Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet
Applied's installed fleet pays it $6.4 billion a year, and the service backlog now exceeds the machine backlog.
The machines Applied sold years ago are still paying it. Applied Global Services, the segment that sells spares, upgrades, service and older equipment, had revenue of $6,385 million in fiscal 2025 and operating income of $1,792 million1. It was about 22.5% of the company's revenue2.
The annuity rests on a simple fact: a chip factory's tools run for many years, and the company that designed them knows best how to keep them running. Applied is strengthening that by selling service as subscriptions3, so that customers pay for uptime.
Services have grown steadily, from $4,155 million in fiscal 20204, about 9% a year5, and the services backlog passed the systems backlog at October 2025, $7,141 million against $7,105 million6.
The limit is that services earn less than machines, a 33.4% gross margin against 54.2%7, and that a growing share of the fleet sits in China, where export licences are needed to service some customers8.
The services segment is also light on capital. Its capital spending was $57 million in fiscal 20259, against operating income of $1,792 million10. That is the sign of an annuity: a business that earns on assets its customers paid for, using people and spare parts rather than new plant.
The installed base is also what gives Applied a reason to be in every customer's factory every week. Service engineers see which tools are running short of capacity and which steps are giving trouble, and that knowledge feeds the next sale. The services backlog grew from $4,335 million at October 2021 to $7,141 million at October 20251112, which says customers want more of that presence, not less.
The annuity has one more advantage: it carries little cyclical inventory risk. Services need spare parts on hand, but not the large stock of unfinished machines that systems do. Applied's inventories of $6,564 million at July 202613 were built mainly for machines, as the company said when it increased its build plan14.
The installed base is the steadiest part of the moat. It would be falsified by a year in which services revenue falls while the fleet it serves keeps running. The quarterly growth rate, 21.7% in the quarter to July 202615, is what to watch.
Services up every year; subscription model spreading.
The weight of the annuity; a falling share in a machine boom is normal, a falling share in a downturn is not.
