✦ The Future BetsNarrow moat
Applied Materials (AMAT) — the future bets
Applied has raised its 2026 outlook three times and doubled its capacity, betting that AI chip demand runs through 2027.
Applied's future bets are mostly about capacity to meet demand it says is already visible. Its guidance for Semiconductor Systems revenue in calendar 2026 went from growth of "over 20 percent" in February1 to "more than 30 percent" in May2, and was raised again in August without a new figure34.
To deliver it, Applied has built. Capital spending doubled to $2,260 million in fiscal 20255, a new Singapore campus "more than doubles Applied’s advanced cleanroom capacity in Singapore"6, and headcount rose to 38.9 thousand7.
The bets beyond chips are small. Applied signed a long-term joint development agreement with EssilorLuxottica for optics for smart eyewear8, building on its display business.
The largest bet is on timing. The company says it expects "another strong growth year for Applied Materials in 2027"9. Its fourth-quarter guidance of $10,250 million would take fiscal 2026 revenue to about $34,287 million, up about 20.9%10.
The market already expects the bets to pay. Thirty-nine analysts covered the shares in September 2026 with an average target of $640.8911, and the stock had risen 136.10% in fifty-two weeks12. The price range over that year, $196.20 to $739.6713, shows how much of the outcome is already argued over in the share price.
The bets share one assumption: that artificial intelligence keeps pushing chipmakers to add steps. The chief executive said "the rapid global adoption of AI drives unprecedented demand for our materials engineering solutions"14. If that demand slows, every one of these bets, the campus, the headcount and the 2027 promise, becomes a cost to carry.
The bets are only as good as the demand behind them. The test is fiscal 2027 revenue: another year of double-digit growth would vindicate the capacity; a decline would leave Applied with a doubled factory and a smaller order book.
Guidance raised three times; capacity expanded.
The near-term demand Applied sees; missing the range would mean orders slipped.
