Nine Years of Dividend IncreasesNarrow moat

Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet

Applied has raised its dividend for nine years while paying out only a fifth of its earnings.

Applied pays a small dividend and raises it every year. In the second quarter of fiscal 2026 it increased the quarterly dividend "by 15 percent, from $0.46 to $0.53 per share, marking nine consecutive years of dividend increases"1. Dividends declared were $1.78 a share in fiscal 2025, $1.52 in 2024 and $1.22 in 20232.

Almost doubled in four years.

The payout is low. Dividends paid were $1,384 million in fiscal 20253, about 19.8% of net income4. At $474.25 a share the yield is about 0.45%5.

A low payout is a choice to keep flexibility. Together dividends and buybacks took about 79% of operating cash flow in fiscal 20256, but most of it through buybacks, which can be cut without a public announcement.

The dividend also says the board expects the business to throw off cash through a downturn, since the 10-K says cash dividends are expected "to be paid on a quarterly basis"7.

The dividend has grown from a low base. Applied declared $0.70 a share in fiscal 2018 and $0.83 in 20198, and $1.78 in 20259. The annual rate after the 2026 increase is $2.1210.

The dividend has also grown faster than earnings. Dividends declared per share rose from $1.22 in fiscal 2023 to $1.78 in 202511, about 46%12, while diluted earnings per share rose from $8.11 to $8.661314. The payout has risen from a low base and is still low.

The dividend is small enough to be safe. The thing to check each year is whether the increase continues in a year of falling revenue; a pause would say the board sees the cycle as deeper than the company admits.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Quarterly dividend raised 15% to $0.53 in Q2 FY2026.
