Cash That Outlasts the CycleNarrow moat

Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet

Applied's net cash and high returns let it keep spending on research when customers stop buying.

A cyclical business needs a balance sheet that survives its bad years, and Applied's does. It held net cash of about $2,689 million at July 20261, generated $7,958 million from operations in fiscal 20252, and earned 35.5% on its equity3.

Operating cash flow ($M)5,442FY20215,399FY20228,700FY20238,677FY20247,958FY2025SEC EDGAR XBRL company facts; FY2025 results release
Around $8 billion a year since 2023.

That strength is used in three ways. It funds research through downturns; it funds buybacks that cut the share count by a third in ten years4; and it funds a growing dividend, raised for nine consecutive years5.

It also carries costs. Capital spending doubled to $2,260 million in fiscal 20256, and free cash flow fell to $5,698 million7. In the second quarter of fiscal 2026 operating cash flow was only $845 million as inventories and receivables were built for demand8.

This aspect is a support for the moat rather than the moat itself. It is narrow because any large company with cash can buy back shares; what makes it useful is that Applied can keep spending on research when rivals must cut.

The cash returned has been large against the cash earned. In fiscal 2025 dividends and buybacks took about 79% of operating cash flow9. In the first nine months of fiscal 2026, while building inventory, Applied returned $1,177 million in buybacks and $1,150 million in dividends10, a slower pace than in fiscal 2025.

The pattern of spending since 2015 shows priorities. Across fiscal 2015 to 2025 Applied bought back stock every year, from $649 million in fiscal 2020 to $6,103 million in 202211, and never cut its dividend12. Research, capital spending and the dividend rose; buybacks absorbed whatever was left.

The cash position also gives Applied room to buy. It paid $262 million for acquisitions in the first nine months of fiscal 202613 and bought 9% of Besi in 202514. With net cash of about $2,689 million15 and $5,268 million of long-term investments16, it could make a larger purchase without borrowing, if regulators allowed it.

The test is the next downturn: if Applied keeps research rising and stays in net cash while revenue falls, the balance sheet has done its job.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Net cash maintained; capital spending doubled.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Operating cash flow, latest quarter
$3,037M (Q3 FY2026, a record)

The cash engine; two weak quarters in a row like Q2 FY2026's $845M would test the buyback.
