Korea and the Memory MakersNarrow moat

Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet

Korea brings Applied a fifth of its revenue, mostly from memory makers whose spending follows memory prices.

Korea is Applied's memory market. Revenue from Korea was $5,608 million in fiscal 20251, and $1,521 million in the quarter to July 2026, 17% of the total, up from $1,160 million a year earlier2.

Up a third in a year.

The largest Korean buyer has a long history with Applied. Samsung took 18% of revenue in fiscal 2020, 20% in 2021 and 12% in 202234, and it joined Applied's EPIC research centre in the first quarter of fiscal 20265.

Korean spending follows memory prices. DRAM makers took 26% of Applied's systems revenue in fiscal 2025 and 34% in the first quarter of fiscal 202667, and flash makers only 7%8.

A customer that develops its next process at Applied's research centre is more likely to buy Applied's tools, which is why Samsung's arrival there matters more than one quarter's orders.

Over the first nine months of fiscal 2026 Korea took $4,551 million, 19% of revenue9. Korea's growth in the quarter to July, about 31%10, was faster than the company's, which is consistent with the memory steps described on the DRAM page.

Korea's weight in Applied's business has moved with memory prices for years. Samsung's share of revenue fell from 20% in fiscal 2021 to 12% in 20221112, as memory spending dropped, then returned to 15% in 202313. A Korean customer's budget is the most cyclical of Applied's large relationships.

Korea is a strength for now and a cyclical one. Its share of revenue is what to watch: above 15% through a memory downturn would show the stacked-memory steps are sticky.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Korea $1,160M to $1,521M in Q3 year on year.
