eBeam: Where Applied Meets KLANarrow moat
Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet
Applied sells the electron-beam microscopes that check its own tools' work, and claims to lead the market for them.
Applied does not only make the layers; it also sells tools that inspect them. Its SEMVision and VeritySEM systems use electron beams to find defects and measure features, and its third-quarter release says a new SEMVision model "extends Applied’s leadership in eBeam defect analysis into advanced packaging"1. The claim is Applied's own.
Metrology and inspection are listed among the steps Semiconductor Systems serves2. This is where Applied meets KLA, which TechInsights ranks among the five largest equipment suppliers3 and which was worth $246.05 billion on 24 September 20264.
Inspection matters because it is how a customer learns whether a new process works. A company that sells both the deposition tool and the microscope that checks its output can shorten the customer's learning, which is the argument for Applied's breadth in one step.
Applied's newest inspection tools target stacked memory and chiplets: its VeritySEM model for advanced packaging offers "sub-10nm sensitivity"5.
Inspection also connects to Applied's packaging push. Its new tools target "HBM and chiplet architectures"6, and Applied holds a 9% stake in the packaging-equipment maker Besi7. The company is trying to be present in every step of packaging, as it is in wafer processing.
The inspection business also benefits from Applied's position elsewhere. A chipmaker that runs Applied's deposition and etch tools can check their output on Applied's inspection tools, with data formats and service teams that already work together. That is the breadth argument applied to process control, and it is strongest where the process is new.
This is a narrow position inside a wide business. The evidence to watch is whether Applied's inspection tools spread into packaging lines; if its customers still buy their packaging inspection elsewhere by 2028, the leadership claim will not have translated into share.
New eBeam tools for advanced packaging launched in Q3 FY2026.
The inspection specialist's standing; a KLA value overtaking Applied's would mean process control is where the market sees the value.
