The Revenue LinesWide moat
Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet
Three-quarters of Applied's revenue is machines, a fifth is services on those machines, and the rest is a shrinking display business.
Applied reports two main segments and a third line for everything else. In fiscal 2025 its revenue of $28,368 million came from Semiconductor Systems, $20,798 million; Applied Global Services, $6,385 million; and Corporate and Other, $1,185 million1. That is about 73%, 22% and 4%2.
The chart in this app uses the fiscal 2025 basis, in which Display is folded into Corporate and Other3. For fiscal 2020 to 2022 the Corporate and Other band adds Display and the old corporate line from the 2022 10-K4, so the bands reconcile to reported revenue in every year5.
The lines move differently. Machines grew about 12.8% a year from fiscal 2020 to 2025, services about 9%, and Corporate and Other shrank by about 29%6. Profit is even more concentrated: Semiconductor Systems earned $7,379 million, services $1,792 million, and Corporate and Other lost $882 million in fiscal 20257.
The boundaries changed again in fiscal 2026. Applied moved its 200mm equipment business from services to Semiconductor Systems, allocated all corporate costs to the segments and renamed the third line Other8. Quarterly figures for fiscal 2026 on these pages are on that new basis; the annual chart stops at fiscal 2025, because a recast full year has not been published.
The lines also differ in how quickly they report a change in demand. Machine revenue is recognised when a tool is accepted, so it moves with deliveries; service revenue under agreements is spread over time9. That is why systems revenue fell 8% in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, to $5,141 million from a recast $5,597 million10, while services rose to $1,559 million from $1,353 million11. In a turning market the two lines give opposite signals for a quarter or two.
The segments also differ in where they sell. Semiconductor Systems follows chipmakers' factory plans, and so carries the whole China and customer concentration story; services follow the installed fleet, which is spread wherever tools were sold in the past; Corporate and Other follows screen makers. Applied does not disclose segment revenue by country, so the geographic split cannot be taken further than the company total12.
Operating profit is even more lopsided than revenue. In fiscal 2025 the systems segment earned about 80% of the combined operating income of the two main segments, $7,379 million of $9,171 million13, and services the rest. The third line lost money on the old basis because it carried the shared corporate costs14.
The lines describe a machine company with an annuity attached. The services share of revenue, 22.5% in fiscal 202515, is the figure to follow: rising through a downturn would show the annuity cushioning the cycle, and falling with the machines would show it does not.
Machines and services both growing; the remainder small.
How much of the company rides the equipment cycle; a rising share means more cyclical exposure.
