Applied Materials (AMAT) — threat to the moat
China's government is funding domestic toolmakers in the market that gave Applied 37% of its revenue in 2024.
China is where Applied's breadth is most at risk, because the government there is paying for rivals. The 10-K warns: "We could see increased competition from domestic equipment manufacturers in China resulting from local government incentives and funding"1. TechInsights reports that "Chinese newcomers are making inroads and expanding market shares"2.
China is not a small market to lose ground in. It took 37.2% of Applied's revenue in fiscal 2024 and 30.1% in fiscal 20253, and 28% in the quarter to July 20264. Some of that decline is export controls rather than competition, but the two work together: controls stop Applied selling certain tools, and domestic makers fill the space.
The domestic makers do not need to match Applied at the leading edge. They need to be good enough for the mature processes that most Chinese fabs run, where Applied's breadth counts for less.
Applied's own geography shows how little it has on the ground there. Its long-lived assets in China were only $8 million in fiscal 20255, against $8,529 million of revenue from Chinese customers the same year6. The company sells into China but does not build there, which limits what it loses if the market closes and also limits how close it can stay to the customers that domestic rivals serve from next door.
This danger is real and already showing. The figure to follow is China's share of revenue; if it falls below 20% while Chinese chipmakers keep spending, the rivals will have taken the business rather than regulation.
