Sixteen Years of Dividend Growth, Fewer BuybacksNarrow moat
UnitedHealth Group (UNH) — moat facet
UnitedHealth cut its buyback in 2025 and still raised its dividend, for the sixteenth year.
UnitedHealth kept paying its shareholders through the bad year, but it chose which way. Dividends paid were $6,761 million in 2023, $7,533 million in 2024 and $7,916 million in 2025, or $7.29, $8.18 and $8.73 a share1. The annual rate rose to $9.28 from June 20262, and a data provider counts 16 years of dividend growth3.
Buybacks took the cut. Share repurchases were $8,000 million in 2023, $9,000 million in 2024 and $5,545 million in 20254, with none at all in the fourth quarter of 20255. They resumed in 2026: about 10.5 million shares at an average of $344.08 in the first half6, and management guides to at least $5,000 million for the year7.
The choice shows priorities. A dividend is a commitment the company wants to keep; a buyback is flexible.
In 2025 the company paid out $13,461 million in dividends and buybacks8, about 112% of net earnings9 but about 84% of free cash flow10.
The buybacks have also bought fewer shares at lower prices. The company repurchased 17 million shares at an average of $529.85 in 2024 and 12 million at $454.82 in 202511; in the first half of 2026 the average was $344.0812, and a forward contract settled on 1 July 2026 at $312.73 a share for 6.4 million shares13. Shares outstanding fell from 907,675,839 in February 2026 to 897,594,847 in July1415.
The dividend record is a narrow signal of financial strength. The measure is the payout against free cash flow; staying below 100% while buybacks resume would say the capital returns are funded by the business, not by debt.
Dividend rate $9.28; buybacks resumed in 2026.
The commitment the company protected in 2025; a pause would signal real financial stress.
