ServicesNarrow moat

Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet

Services earns Cisco's best margin, 68.8%, on $15 billion of support contracts, and did not grow at all in fiscal 2026.

Services is Cisco's second-largest line and its most profitable. It sold $15,030 million in fiscal 2026, against $15,046 million a year earlier1, about 23.7% of revenue2. In the fourth quarter it sold $3,793 million, flat3.

Margin rising while revenue stands still.

What is inside is mostly technical support and maintenance on installed Cisco equipment and software. Most of it recurs: subscription services revenue was $13,663 million in fiscal 20264, about 91% of the line5.

The history is slow, steady growth that has now stopped. Services sold $11,993 million in fiscal 20166, $13,323 million in fiscal 20207, $13,539 million in fiscal 2022 and $13,856 million in fiscal 20238, then $14,550 million and $15,046 million9. Over ten years it grew about 25%10.

How it is paid: by contract, often for several years, invoiced in advance. Cisco held $15,964 million of deferred services revenue at the end of fiscal 202611 and $23,298 million of services performance obligations12.

Profitability is disclosed and high. Services gross margin was 66.8% in fiscal 2022, 66.4% in fiscal 202313, 68.1% in fiscal 2024, 68.5% in fiscal 2025 and 68.8% in fiscal 202614, against 63.2% for products15. The line produced $10,346 million of gross profit16.

Growth has gone. Services revenue fell 1% in the Americas, rose 3% in EMEA and was flat in APJC17. Services annual recurring revenue grew 2%18, and management expects only low single-digit growth in fiscal 202719.

Services is also exposed to Cisco's workforce cuts. Employees fell from about 90,400 in fiscal 2024 to about 82,4002021, and the fiscal 2026 restructuring plan was meant partly to redirect people to growth areas22. Support quality is what customers pay the premium for; if cost cuts reach the support engineers, the margin may rise for a year and the renewals fall after.

The line is concentrated where Cisco is largest. By segment, services revenue was $8,899 million in the Americas, $3,806 million in EMEA and $2,326 million in APJC in fiscal 202623. A flat line across three regions is a mature annuity, not a regional problem.

The outlook depends on whether the fiscal 2026 hardware wave brings new support contracts with it. The verdict would change if services revenue fell in fiscal 2027 despite that wave; it would mean new equipment, much of it sold to hyperscalers, carries less support than the old, and the annuity has peaked.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Margin rising to 68.8%; revenue flat.
