⚠ Tariffs, China and an American SupplierModerate threat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat
Cisco's own filing warns that customers abroad may become less willing to buy American products, and 46% of its revenue comes from outside the United States.
Cisco's international business depends on customers being willing to buy American equipment. About 54% of fiscal 2026 revenue came from the United States1, so the rest, some $29 billion, is exposed to how other countries treat American suppliers2.
Cisco's filing is direct about the risks. It lists "U.S. foreign relations impacting customer willingness to buy U.S. products" and "international tensions (including China-Taiwan relations)"3. On tariffs it says the extent of exposure "is uncertain but could be significant" if it cannot mitigate it4. And it reports "price-focused competition from competitors in Asia, especially from China"5, naming Huawei as a competitor6.
The fiscal 2026 numbers show no damage yet. Product revenue grew 18% in the United States, 31% in the United Kingdom, 16% in Germany and Japan, and 23% in China, but fell 10% in Brazil7. Cisco does not disclose revenue from China.
The risk is a policy decision rather than a market trend, and those arrive suddenly. A tariff on imported components or a foreign government's preference for domestic suppliers could change a region's growth within a quarter.
The exposure has a supply side too. On the fourth-quarter call Cisco said it has direct relationships with TSMC and has made investments such as in Nanya on the memory side8. The same "China-Taiwan relations" Cisco lists as a risk9 can therefore reach its supply chain as well as its customers.
The regional spread within the Americas shows how uneven the effects already are. Product revenue grew 18% in the United States, 8% in Canada and 25% in Mexico, and fell 10% in Brazil10, where Cisco is also contesting import-tax claims dating from 2004 to 200711.
Look at EMEA and APJC revenue growth, 12% and 9% in fiscal 20261213. If either falls sharply while the Americas holds, customers abroad will be choosing suppliers by flag.
Exposure to how other countries treat American suppliers; sharp slowing outside the Americas would show the risk arriving.
