⚠ From Net Cash to Net DebtLow threat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat
Splunk turned Cisco from a net lender into a net borrower paying about $600 million a year more in interest than it earns.
Before Splunk, Cisco held more cash than debt; now it owes more than it holds. At the end of fiscal 2023 its net debt to equity was negative1, meaning net cash. At the end of fiscal 2026 total debt was $29,533 million2 against cash and investments of $15.9 billion3, net debt of about $13.6 billion4.
The change shows up in interest. In fiscal 2024 Cisco earned $1,365 million of interest income against $1,006 million of expense; in fiscal 2026 it earned $866 million and paid $1,470 million5. Net interest went from a gain of about $359 million to a cost of about $604 million6.
More of the borrowing is short term. Commercial paper outstanding was $6.7 billion against $3.5 billion a year earlier7.
Most of the debt is fixed. Senior fixed-rate notes had a principal of $23.0 billion at the end of fiscal 20268, and short-term debt was $10,161 million against long-term debt of $19,372 million9. With about a third of the debt due within a year10, Cisco refinances often.
The debt is modest against $12.8 billion of annual free cash flow11. The warning would be net debt rising while buybacks continue: if it passes $20 billion, Cisco will be borrowing to return cash rather than returning what it earns.
